Checking what’s trending on Social Media can give you a better understanding of your audience

Trends enable you to ‘join the conversation’ as they happen.
What does Trending mean on Social Media?
Trending topics are a big part of social media. These are the topics and hashtags that people are currently talking about. Checking what’s trending can give you a better understanding of your audience, the types of language they use and give you the ability to create more relevant content that people will want to engage with.
Trends will enable you to ‘join the conversation’ as they happen and they will also help when trying to think of content that your target audience will find interesting.
Twitter Trends
To check what is trending on Twitter just sign in to your account; on a PC the trending topics will be on the left hand side under your profile name. You can see from the screenshot below that our
trends are currently set on ‘United Kingdom’. If you only work locally you may want to change the trending list to a city near you by clicking on ‘change’.

On the Twitter Mobile App just login to your account and click on the magnifying tool glass.

Facebook Trends
When you login to Facebook on the right hand side of your news feed you will see the ‘Trending’ section. The trending topics on Facebook are based around the data Facebook holds about you – this can be pages you have liked or even comments you have made on Facebook.
You will see along the top a few different icons. These icons allow you to check trending topics in different groups. These are politics, science and tech, sports, and entertainment.

Google Trends
To see all the current Google Trends just head to https://trends.google.com/trends/
Instagram Trends
Trends on Instagram work slightly differently. The trends are personalised to your account so you need to be following the right people and hashtags to keep an eye on trends that will relate to you and your business.
Just open up the Instagram app on your phone and click on the magnifying glass along the bottom toolbar. You will see Top, People, Tags and Places. Tags are the hashtags you have followed.

YouTube Trends
Just head to your YouTube homepage and along the toolbar on the left handside you will see ‘Trending’. YouTube will display all the videos currently trending on their platform.
